Scotland Part I: Glasgow / The Highlands / Stirling

Scotland is beautiful...much history, beauty, friendly people and erratic weather!  I am so happy to have spent a week there exploring as much as I did.

The Highlands

I loved my one day tour of the Highlands / Glencoe with Charlie (the Bonnie Prince) of Discover Scotland Day Tours.

Drovers Inn / Charlie (our driver) at the bar...with a coffee!

For over 300 years the Drovers has welcomed the great and good including the infamous Rob Roy MacGregor.  Said to be “haunted” there are many tales and sightings of ghouls and ghosts wandering around the Drovers Inn.

Yes that's correct, we were feeding the deer.  They recognized the tour vehicles as we were pulling up.  I think they are a bit spoiled :)

The Highlands / Glencoe / Caledonian Canal

Urquhart Castle (view from land)

On our way to find Nessie (the Loch Ness monster)!

The Loch Ness Monster is a cryptid, reputedly a large unknown animal that is said to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, though its description varies from one account to the next. Popular interest and belief in the animal's existence has varied since it was first brought to the world's attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings.

Urquhart Castle (view from water)

Urquhart Castle (ruins) sits at the edge of the deepest part of Loch Ness and where most sightings of Nessie have been.

It's Nessie, we found her!!!

Inverness

Snowstorm heading back to Glasgow (we experienced sun, rain, sleet and snow in 1 day!)

A beautiful castle (not sure of it's name)

Stirling

I spent a day in the Stirling area with family members of my dear friend Marie who lives in AB, Canada.  Marie is from Glasgow Scotland where these family members live.  We had a great day exploring the Wallace Monument, quick visit to Stirling castle and a great lunch in an authentic Scotish pub!

Wallace Monument

The National Wallace Monument (generally known as the Wallace Monument) is a tower standing on the summit of Abbey Craig, a hilltop near Stirling in Scotland. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, the 13th century Scottish hero.  The tower was constructed following a fundraising campaign, which accompanied a resurgence of Scottish national identity in the 19th century.

Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle, located in Stirling, is one of the largest and most important castles, both historically and architecturally, in Scotland. The castle sits atop Castle Hill, an intrusive crag, which forms part of the Stirling Sill geological formation. It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs, giving it a strong defensive position.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch and day with Carrie, Tricia and Jackie!
